Description
Onsior is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain and swelling in cats. It is only for cats that are at least 4 months old and weigh at least 2.5 kg (5.5 pounds). Veterinarians often prescribe it after surgeries like orthopedic procedures, spaying, or neutering. When used as directed, it can be safely given for up to three days after surgery.
Directions
Onsior tablets are given by mouth with or without food. Dosing is typically based on body weight. For example, cats 2.5 to 6 kg (5.5 to 13.2 lb) might receive one 6 mg tablet once daily, and cats 6.1 to 12 kg (13.3–26.4 lb) can receive two 6 mg tablets once daily. Treatment may be given for up to three days. Tablets should be given whole and must not be split or broken. The first dose is usually administered about 30 minutes before surgery, at the same time as pre-anesthetic medications.
Ingredients
Robenacoxib is the active ingredient in Onsior.
Contraindications
Onsior tablets should not be used in cats with a known hypersensitivity or intolerance to any ingredients of the medication.
Cautions
- Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
- Any existing health conditions
- Any allergies
- A list of all medications currently being taken
- Before starting Onsior, your veterinarian will examine your cat and may run blood tests to check overall health. Cats should weigh at least 5.5 lbs, be at least 4 months old, and not be pregnant, nursing, or used for breeding.
- Do not give Onsior with other anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) or steroids, as this can increase the risk of serious side effects. If switching from another pain or anti-inflammatory drug, your veterinarian may recommend a waiting period.
- Cats with kidney, liver, or heart problems, or those that are dehydrated, may be at higher risk for side effects. Onsior can affect the stomach, intestines, kidneys, liver, and heart rhythm. Your vet may recommend fluids during surgery to help protect kidney function.
- If your cat needs extra pain relief while on Onsior, your vet may choose a medication from a different drug class. Some other medications, such as certain heart, seizure, or behavioral drugs, may interact with Onsior, so always tell your vet about anything else your cat is taking.
- Store Onsior tablets securely so pets cannot accidentally eat more than prescribed. The tablet and injection forms can be used interchangeably for up to 3 days, but the doses are different.
- Keep it out of reach of children, and seek medical help right away if it’s accidentally swallowed by a person.
Side Effects
In cats, the most common side effects reported with Onsior include bleeding or infection at the surgical site, reduced appetite, lethargy, and vomiting. Other possible effects seen during studies were diarrhea, weight loss, urinary problems, or changes in activity. Anorexia, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and kidney problems are also possible but rare. Monitor the cat closely and contact a veterinarian if any unusual symptoms appear.
