What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Orilissa (Elagolix) is a medication designed to manage moderate to severe pain related to endometriosis. It works by acting as a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist. Elagolix reduces the production of estrogen, which can lessen the symptoms of endometriosis. Tablets of Orilissa are taken orally and come in varying dosages.

    Directions

Orilissa is taken orally in tablet form. Standard dosage options include 150 mg once daily for 24 months or 200 mg twice daily for six months. The choice between these dosages depends on the severity of the endometriosis symptoms. For people with moderate liver impairment, the daily dose is limited to 150 mg per day for up to six months. Patients are advised to take Orilissa at the same times each day, with or without food.

    Ingredients

Elagolix is the active ingredient in Orilissa.

    Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

    • Pregnant or planning to become pregnant
    • Known osteoporosis
    • Severe liver impairment
    • Taking organic anion transporting polypeptide (OATP) 1B1 inhibitors
    • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to Orilissa or any of its ingredients

    Cautions

    • Before beginning treatment with Orilissa, it's important to discuss the following with your healthcare provider:
      • Your current health conditions
      • Any allergies you may have
      • All medications you are currently using
      • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Orilissa can decrease bone mineral density (BMD) which may not fully recover after stopping the medication, especially with longer use or higher doses. Women at higher risk for bone loss should have their bone density assessed.
    • Orilissa may change menstrual bleeding patterns, making it harder to recognize pregnancy. If you suspect you might be pregnant, get tested immediately. Stop using Orilissa if pregnancy is confirmed.
    • Be aware of any new or worsening symptoms of depression, anxiety, or mood changes, including thoughts of suicide. Seek medical help immediately if you experience these symptoms.
    • Orilissa can cause increases in liver enzymes which could indicate liver damage. Watch for symptoms such as jaundice, dark urine, or right-sided abdominal pain and consult a doctor if these occur.
    • Do not use hormonal contraceptives during Orilissa treatment and for 28 days after stopping, as Orilissa can reduce their effectiveness and increase estrogen-related side effects. Use non-hormonal contraception instead.

    Side Effects

Orilissa often leads to hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, nausea, and trouble sleeping. Some women may also experience an absence of menstrual periods, anxiety, joint pain, and mood changes, including depression.

Orilissa can cause significant mood changes, potentially leading to suicidal thoughts or behavior. If you experience new or worsening symptoms such as thoughts of suicide, depression, or anxiety, seek immediate medical attention. It’s important to monitor for sudden changes in mood or behavior. In addition, Orilissa may affect liver function, indicated by yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, nausea, swelling, pain in the upper stomach area, or easy bruising. Contact your healthcare provider right away if these symptoms occur.
