What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Osurnia is a topical gel made for dogs’ ears only and must never be used on cats. The drug contains an antibiotic, an antifungal, and a steroid, along with inactive ingredients that help the gel spread and stay in place. It’s used to treat outer ear infections (otitis externa) caused by common bacteria like Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and yeast such as Malassezia pachydermatis. It can help control infection, reduce swelling, and relieve discomfort.

    Directions

A veterinarian typically needs to administer Osurnia. Do not use this medication without veterinary supervision.

    1. The dog's ear canal will be cleaned and dried before applying the medication.
    2. Check that the eardrum (tympanic membrane) is intact.
    3. One dose (the entire tube) of Osurnia is squeezed into each infected ear.
    4. Application is repeated in 7 days.

After application, the base of the ear should be gently massaged to help the gel reach the lower ear canal. The dog should be restrained for a short time to minimize head shaking, which can cause the medication to splatter. Do not clean the ear canal for 45 days after the first treatment. Cleaning sooner may decrease how well the medicine works.

    Ingredients

Osurnia contains the active ingredients terbinafine, florfenicol, and betamethasone acetate.

    Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

    • Known or suspected perforation of the ear drum
    • Allergy or hypersensitivity to florfenicol, terbinafine, or corticosteroids

    Cautions

    • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
      • Any existing health conditions
      • Any allergies
      • A list of all medications currently being taken
    • Osurnia is for use in dogs only. Keep it out of reach of children, and seek medical help if it’s accidentally swallowed. If it gets in your eyes, rinse with water for at least 15 minutes and see a doctor if irritation develops. Wash the skin thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
    • When applying Osurnia, wear eye protection and hold your dog’s head steady to reduce splatter and prevent accidental eye injury to you or your dog. This is especially important because the product can irritate or damage the eyes.
    • Your veterinarian should check your dog’s eardrum before each dose, as Osurnia has not been tested in dogs with a ruptured eardrum. If your dog shows signs like hearing loss, head tilt, balance problems, unusual eye movements, or facial drooping during treatment, contact a vet immediately.
    • Do not give Osurnia by mouth. In some cases, the use of ear medications with steroids can affect hormone levels in dogs. It should also be used carefully in dogs with liver problems.
    • The safety of Osurnia in breeding dogs, pregnant dogs, or nursing mothers has not been established. Your vet will help decide if the benefits outweigh the risks in these situations.

    Side Effects

The most common side effects reported with Osurnia during clinical studies were elevated liver enzymes, vomiting, and, in rare cases, hearing loss. Less common effects included weight loss or a decrease in hearing, which occurred in both treated and placebo groups. Post-approval reports have also observed deafness, ear discharge, ear pain, head shaking, balance problems, and neurological signs such as facial paralysis.

Accidental human exposure, especially if the dog shakes its head after treatment, can cause eye irritation or corneal ulcers. In dogs, additional side effects reported include poor muscle control, eye injury, and ruptured eardrum. Watch your pet closely after application and seek veterinary advice if any unusual signs appear.
