What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Pyohex (chlorhexidine gluconate) is a medicated antibacterial shampoo for dogs that helps treat mild skin infections. These infections, known as superficial bacterial dermatitis, are usually caused by Staphylococcus bacteria and can happen when another problem, such as allergies, fleas, mites, or hormonal conditions, irritates the skin. Its active ingredient, chlorhexidine gluconate, kills bacteria on the skin while the shampoo removes dirt, flakes, and extra oil. Pyohex is often used with Pyohex Medicated Conditioner and any other treatment recommended by your veterinarian.

    Directions

Pyohex Medicated Shampoo is for use on dogs’ skin and coat only. Wet your dog with clean water, then apply about 1 mL of shampoo for each kilogram of body weight, such as 10 mL for a 10 kg dog.

Massage the shampoo into the coat and work it down to the skin. Using a sponge may help make a lather. Leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes, then rinse well with clean water and towel dry. Do not leave your dog alone while the shampoo is on.

For active infections, use twice a week until symptoms improve, then once a week or as your veterinarian advises.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Pyohex Medicated Shampoo is chlorhexidine gluconate. The full list of inactive ingredients is not published by the manufacturer.

    Cautions

Before using this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:

    • Any existing health conditions your pet has
    • Any known allergies
    • A list of all medications and topical products your pet is currently using

Pyohex is for topical use on dogs only and is for animal treatment only. It is not for use in or around the eyes, mouth, or ears. If foam gets into your dog’s eye, flush thoroughly with clean water and seek veterinary advice if any eye changes are seen.

Do not leave your dog unattended while the shampoo is on the coat. Licking or inhaling the foam can irritate the gastrointestinal or respiratory tracts.

Skin infections are often secondary to an underlying problem such as allergies, parasites, or a hormonal disease. For the best results, the underlying condition should also be identified and treated by a veterinarian.

For deep skin infections, also called deep pyoderma, or to gain initial control of an infection, additional antibiotic treatment prescribed by a veterinarian is often recommended alongside the shampoo.

When handling the product, avoid contact with your own eyes and skin, as it may cause irritation. Wearing rubber gloves and washing your hands after use is recommended.

Keep out of reach of children. Store below 30°C, or room temperature, and do not freeze.

    Contraindications

Avoid using this medication if any of the following apply:

    • A known allergy or hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine gluconate or to any other ingredient in Pyohex Medicated Shampoo.
    • Use in animals other than dogs, unless specifically directed by a veterinarian, as Pyohex is registered for use in dogs.

    Side Effects

Common side effects of Pyohex Medicated Shampoo may include:

    • Skin irritation or redness at the application site
    • Eye irritation if the foam gets into the eyes
    • Dryness of the skin or coat with repeated bathing
    • Stomach upset or coughing if the foam is licked or inhaled

Stop using Pyohex and contact your veterinarian if your dog develops signs of an allergic reaction or worsening skin problems, such as increased redness, swelling, itching, hives, or a rash where the shampoo was applied. Seek veterinary advice if eye irritation does not settle after rinsing, or if your dog shows signs of stomach upset or breathing problems after licking or inhaling the foam. If the skin infection does not improve or gets worse, have your dog checked, as a different treatment may be needed.
