Signifor Lar (Pasireotide)

What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Signifor LAR (Pasireotide) is a prescription medicine belonging to a class of drugs known as somatostatin analogs. It primarily assists in treating adults with acromegaly, a condition typically occurring when the pituitary gland produces an excess of growth hormone. It is also approved for Cushing’s disease. Pasireotide functions by mimicking the effects of the natural hormone somatostatin, which blocks the release of several hormones including growth hormone. Administered as an injectable suspension, Signifor LAR offers a therapeutic option for patients where surgery has not been effective or is not a viable option.

    Directions

Signifor LAR is an injectable suspension specifically designed for intramuscular use. Healthcare providers administer Signifor LAR in a clinical setting. For treating acromegaly, the typical initial dose is 40 mg once every four weeks. In the case of Cushing's disease, patients may start with a lower dose of 10 mg, also administered intramuscularly every four weeks.

It's important to adhere to the scheduled dosing regimen and monitor any adverse effects or necessary adjustments in dosing with your healthcare professional. As with any medication, follow your doctor's instructions closely, and do not alter the dose unless directed by your healthcare provider.

    Ingredients

Pasireotide is the active ingredient in Signifor LAR injections.

    Contraindications

There are no contraindications currently listed on the drug label.

    Cautions

    • Before initiating treatment with Signifor Lar, make sure to inform your healthcare provider about the following:
      • Any health conditions you have
      • Any allergies
      • The complete list of medications you are currently taking
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Signifor LAR can significantly raise your blood sugar levels, potentially leading to diabetes or even ketoacidosis, a severe condition resulting from untreated high blood sugar. You should regularly check your blood sugar levels, especially after starting treatment, changing your dose, or stopping the medication. If you notice symptoms like increased thirst, frequent urination, or extreme tiredness, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
    • This medication may cause a decrease in heart rate or prolong the QT interval, a specific measure on an ECG that can affect heart rhythm. Prior to starting treatment and at intervals during your treatment, you'll need an ECG and possibly blood tests to monitor your electrolytes, which help regulate heart function.
    • Signifor LAR can affect liver enzymes, indicating changes in liver health. Your doctor will perform tests to check your liver function before you start treatment and continue to monitor it during treatment.
    • There is a risk of developing gallstones when taking Signifor LAR. If you develop symptoms such as intense abdominal pain, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly as these could indicate complications from gallstones.
    • Since Signifor LAR impacts hormone levels produced by the pituitary gland, regular monitoring of these hormones is essential. Any significant changes might require additional treatment.

    Side Effects

Common side effects of Signifor LAR include diarrhea, headaches, stomach pain, hair loss, nasal congestion, sore throat, nausea, increased levels of certain enzymes, tiredness, bloating, low blood sugar, high blood pressure, swelling in limbs, back pain, and decreased appetite. These effects are generally manageable but can affect daily activities.

Signifor LAR can lead to significant health issues like high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), diabetes, and ketoacidosis, a condition needing prompt treatment highlighted by symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, nausea, and confusion. It can also cause a slow heart rate (bradycardia) and changes in the heart's electrical activity, necessitating close monitoring for those with heart conditions. Gallstones and related complications may occur, requiring ultrasound monitoring for symptoms like severe abdominal pain and jaundice. Additionally, Signifor LAR may reduce pituitary hormone levels, with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Regular medical follow-ups are crucial to monitor and manage these potential risks.
