What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Xalacom is an eye drop solution that combines two active ingredients, Latanoprost and Timolol Maleate, to treat specific types of glaucoma and high intraocular pressure (IOP). Latanoprost, a prostaglandin analog, improves the drainage of fluid from the eyes, lowering IOP. Timolol Maleate, a beta-blocker, reduces fluid production within the eye. Together, these ingredients help safeguard the optic nerve and vision by maintaining a healthier eye pressure level. Xalacom may be beneficial for patients who do not adequately respond to single eye pressure medications.

    Directions

The typical Xalacom dosage is one drop daily into the affected eye(s). Patients should apply one drop into the eye, being careful not to exceed the recommended dose, as more frequent use may reduce the drug's effectiveness. Before application, patients should remove contact lenses and wait at least 15 minutes after using the drops before reinserting them.

It is important to prevent contamination of the dropper tip or solution. Patients should adhere to their doctor's instructions, watch for potential interactions with other medications, and monitor for side effects like vision changes, eye pain, or signs of an allergic reaction.

    Ingredients

Xalacom is an ophthalmic solution that primarily comprises two active ingredients: Latanoprost and Timolol Maleate.

    Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

    • Reactive airway diseases, such as bronchial asthma, or if there’s a history of bronchial asthma, or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
    • Cardiac conditions such as sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, sino-atrial block, or second or third degree atrioventricular block not controlled by pacemaker.
    • Allergic reactions to either of the active ingredients Latanoprost or Timolol, or any other component of the formulation.

    Cautions

    • Before beginning treatment with Xalacom, it's important to discuss the following with your healthcare provider:
      • Your current health conditions
      • Any allergies you may have
      • All medications you are currently using
      • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Avoid wearing contact lenses if possible because this product contains benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by contact lenses.
    • Latanoprost, an ingredient in Xalacom, may change the color of your eyes by increasing brown pigment. This change could be permanent.
    • Use caution with Xalacom if you have a history of herpes keratitis because this medication can exacerbate the condition.
    • Watch for significant changes in eyelid color and eyelash growth, such as increased length and pigmentation, which can occur with the use of Latanoprost.
    • Be aware of the risk of macular edema, especially if you have had cataract surgery or have risk factors for this eye condition.
    • If you have severe heart or respiratory conditions, use Xalacom with caution due to potential adverse effects from Timolol, another ingredient.
    • Be cautious about surgical procedures as Xalacom contains beta-blockers, which can affect heart response and blood pressure during surgery.
    • Monitor and manage blood sugar levels if you have diabetes because beta-blockers in Xalacom can mask signs of low blood sugar.
    • Beta-blockers can also mask symptoms of hyperthyroidism; abrupt withdrawal could worsen the condition.
    • If you have myasthenia gravis, be aware that Timolol might exacerbate muscle weakness.
    • People with a history of severe allergic reactions should know that beta-blockers can increase sensitivity to allergens and reduce the effectiveness of epinephrine used to treat anaphylactic reactions.
    • Use Xalacom cautiously if you have corneal diseases or are prone to dry eyes, as it may aggravate these conditions.

    Side Effects

Xalacom eye drops may cause a permanent increase in the brown pigment of the iris, particularly noticeable in users with mixed-color eyes. Other common reactions include eye irritation, pain, and typical symptoms such as burning, itching, or the sensation of a foreign body in the eye. These effects generally do not require stopping the medication unless they are severe.

Xalacom can also affect heart function, which is a concern especially for those with pre-existing heart conditions. It's important to monitor and report any changes in heart rate or symptoms such as chest pain or palpitations. In addition, serious allergic reactions such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe skin rashes require immediate medical attention. Prolonged use of Xalacom might lead to more serious complications like changes in blood sugar levels, eye cysts, or sensitivity to light.
