What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

    Description

    Rocaltrol (calcitriol) is a vitamin D analog.

    Rocaltrol uses include managing:

    • secondary hyperparathyroidism and metabolic bone disease in patients with chronic kidney failure who are not yet receiving dialysis
    • low calcium levels in the blood and metabolic bone disease in patients on chronic kidney dialysis
    • low calcium levels in the blood and its clinical manifestations in patients with postsurgical hypoparathyroidism, idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, and pseudohypoparathyroidism


    Rocaltrol is available in 0.25 mcg and 0.5 mcg oral capsules and an oral solution containing 1 mcg/mL.

    Directions

    Take Rocaltrol as prescribed by your doctor. If any questions or concerns arise, tell your doctor or pharmacist.

    Dosing of Rocaltrol is individualized. The dose should be initiated at the lowest effective dose and increased with close monitoring of blood calcium levels. Your doctor will determine an optimal dose for you.

    Ingredients

    Calcitriol is contained in Rocaltrol.

    Contraindications

    Do not take Rocaltrol if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

    Do not take Rocaltrol if you have high calcium levels in the blood or if you have evidence of vitamin D toxicity.

    Cautions

    Before you start treatment with Rocaltrol, inform your doctor of:

    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions and past medical history
    • Your pregnancy status
    • Your breastfeeding status
    • Excessive doses of Rocaltrol can cause high calcium levels in the blood and possibly the urine. Patients who have limited mobility (e.g., patients who have had surgery) may be at risk.

    Side Effects

    Rocaltrol side effects are similar to adverse effects associated with excessive vitamin D intake. These side effects include weakness, headache, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, muscle pain, bone pain, metallic taste, anorexia, abdominal pain, and stomach ache. Contact your doctor right away if you experience side effects that worry you or won’t go away.
